Expanding Log Procurement in North Carolina

$

Clendenin Lumber, a subsidiary of Baillie Lumber Co., has recently expanded our hardwood log procurement into the Mountains of North Carolina.

nodine"Access to high quality Red Oak timber from the mountains of North Carolina has opened up new markets for us", says Billy Hook, Log Sales manager for Clendenin.

The buyers in the veneer and sawlog markets demand a fine textured Red Oak log that is free of internal defects. The Red Oak trees growing at these high elevations in North Carolina are excellent for this.  We find that these logs are in high demand in the United States, as well as in several overseas markets such as China and Vietnam.

To support our efforts in this region Clendenin Lumber recently hired Charles Nodine to purchase mountain timber and cut logs.

"Charles has a wealth of experience, knowledge and industry contacts. We are glad to have him join our team", says Hook.

Mr. Nodine has an over ten years of procurement experience in North Carolina, Tennessee, South Carolina and Virginia.  He earned his Associates Degree in Forest Management from Haywood Community College.  He is a member of several industry associations including the Tennessee Forestry Association, the North Carolina Forestry association, and the Carolina Loggers Association.

“My approach is to strive to build long term relationships with landowners and loggers. I simply try to treat others the way I want to be treated knowing that if our loggers succeed so will we. That’s the philosophy I will try to bring to this role with Baillie as well”, says Charles Nodine, Baillie Lumber Forester.

The addition of Mr. Nodine is another example of the success the Clendenin hardwood Log program has had.  The people in this program source logs from some of the finest forests throughout Upstate South Carolina, Western North Carolina and Northeast Georgia. The experienced staff in this program supervise each step of the log process to ensure customers receive exactly what they desire.

“Log sales remain brisk.  We have been getting some of the best white oak, ash and hickory logs that I've seen recently and adding high quality red oak from the Smoky Mountain of North Carolina really rounds out our hardwood log sales program.  All of our foresters are doing a terrific job of buying the type of high quality timber we need to meet our customer's requirements", mentions Hook.

We welcome Charles to the Baillie Lumber team!

Baillie Lumber has been manufacturing hardwood timber mats for a few years now in our Clendenin Lumber facility in Donalds, South Carolina.

These high quality hardwood mats, sometimes referred to as crane mats, bridge mats, or road mats, are produced from solid oak so they will be durable stand up to the wear and tear of construction zones and various weather conditions better than standard mixed hardwood mats.

timber mat machineDue to increased customer demand, an additional investment in equipment and resources was made to help increase production.

Over the past few months a new drilling rig and assembly shed were installed.  This project was led by sawmill manager Matt Fisk and management trainee Jacques Ntahoturi and completed entirely with the existing staff at the yard.  “It was a great project to work on”, said Mr. Fisk. “It is a great testament to the skilled and experienced team we have working here to be able to complete this project without additional resources.”

With the installing of the new drilling rig at Clendenin Lumber they will be able to double their rate of mat production and also add the capability of manufacturing custom designed or customer specific mat sizes to their product mix.

“The addition of manufacturing hardwood timber mats to our product mix has really helped the sawmill work more efficiently,” mentioned Matt Reynolds Clendenin Sawmill Manager.  “We look forward to this new equipment helping us meet our rising customer demand.”

Clendenin Lumber’s hardwood timber mats are typically assembled in both 16’ and 18’ lengths which is a commonly requested size for companies in the oil and gas, utility, and road building industries.

After 25 years of service, the longtime Baillie Titusville leader, Dewey Swift, will be calling it a career. Mr. Swift joined the Baillie team in 1991 and has been an instrumental part of the growth and success of the facility.

With his leadership, Baillie has been able to update, improve and grow the Titusville, Pennsylvania hardwood lumber concentration yard into one of the premier facilities in the Baillie network.

During his tenure, the Titusville facility saw a great deal of transformation. Some of the more memorable activities include the installation of a new stacking machine in 1994, a PHL line in 2002, the boiler upgrade in 2006 and currently the installation of a new lumber t-sheds this year. Mr. Swift has also been instrumental in the Titusville yard nearly doubling its production capacity over the past 25 years.

“I will look back fondly on the progress and success we were able to achieve”, said Mr. Swift. “But most of all I will remember all the great people I had the pleasure to work with here at Baillie Lumber.”

Team Commitment and Dedication Drives Success

Last year proved to be a difficult year for many sawmill operations. But the team at Clendenin Lumber seemed to once again rise to the occasion.

Clendenin Lumber is a location of Baillie Lumber Co., located in Donalds, South Carolina. They specialize in the production of green and kiln dried hardwood lumber with the primary species sawn being red oak, white oak and poplar.

Clendenin SawmillIn 2016, the team in the Clendenin sawmill surpassed 20 million board feet of production for the first time in several years and the first time ever as a single shift operation! This was despite the fact that for the first 90 days of the year production was below target due to lower than expected log decks.

“You have to hand it to the team”, said Matt Fisk mill manager. “From the end of rainy season in March through the fourth quarter of the year, our employees worked 50 and 60 hours per week to help meet production goals.”

During the year the Clendenin sawmill focused intently on the creation of standard 4/4 grade lumber and various industrial grade hardwood lumber products.

Two industrial grade products that were a significant focus for the mill last year included hardwood timber mats and hardwood cants. The timber mats produced at Clendenin come in various lengths and are predominately available in an 8” thickness. The hardwood cants produced also come in various sizes and are available both green or kiln dried.

“Last year’s success would not have been possible without the commitment and dedication of the men and women on the team. You really have to hand it to all our employees, they are true professionals.” said Mr. Fisk.

Training Turns into Team Building

North American hardwoods continue to be in demand in regions all around the world. Designers, architects and manufacturers specifically request certain American hardwood lumber species for all types of projects ranging from furniture and flooring to decorative wall panels and custom cabinetry.

amy jamie2When manufacturers outside of the United States possess their own sawmilling capabilities they sometimes turn to importing hardwood logs instead of lumber to produce their products. When they do, the Baillie Log team is there to help them find the logs they need to get the job done.

The Baillie Lumber Williamsport, Pennsylvania facility is one of our primary locations for hardwood log exports. It is here that logs are scaled, graded, stacked, sorted and loaded into containers for international shipment.

Proper preparation for export shipments takes time and communication.  Recently a team of people from Baillie’s main office travelled to Williamsport to see firsthand how hardwood logs are prepared and to discuss ways to streamline operations to improve shipment intervals.

“It was great to spend time with Williamsport log team and discuss process improvement”, said Jessica Eschberger sales assistant team leader  “By focusing on certain workflow improvements we are now better able to forecast when loads will be ready for booking and we expect to be able to decrease shipping intervals by as much as 20%.”

Jon Hand, Williamsport log manager added, “it was nice to identify a few key areas for process improvement but the real benefit of this visit was the team building that took place.”

The Baillie Williamsport log yard buys and sells hardwood logs year round. They provide all major Appalachian hardwood species including cherry, hard maple, hickory, red oak and walnut.

Log Yards Prove Useful in Pennsylvania

Log Yards Prove Useful in Pennsylvania

Not every hardwood log harvested from a forest is used in a sawmill. To maximize value, sawmills must evaluate the characteristics of a log and determine if it best sawed into lumber.  Many times, sawmills determine that some hardwood logs would be better off used to produce wooden veneers or other specialty products such as white oak staves.

For reasons such as this, simply sending all logs from a harvest to a sawmill may not maximize value.

Today, Baillie Lumber operates three hardwood log concentration yards, not associated with sawmills, throughout the state. IMG 2747 2

These facilities are staffed and managed by experienced industry professionals specifically trained to determine how logs can be utilized best.  These facilities are used to purchase, grade, and sort logs to determine which ones are suited for a domestic mill or suited for direct shipment to one of our customers for processing.

“The use of multiple log concentration yards in Pennsylvania has really helped us improve efficiency and volume”, said Jon Hand Hardwood Log Division Manager. “Since they are geographically dispersed across the state it helps us to do business with many more log suppliers.”

MVIMG 20180403 144719 3

Baillie purchases hardwood veneer logs and saw logs from sawmills and loggers year-round. Baillie has developed consistent and reputable markets all across the world which ensure our log suppliers receive the most value from their logs.

Today we find that the hardwood log market is very strong.  We see the most requests for White Ash, Walnut, Cherry, and Red Oak logs in all log grades.

Hardwood Lumber Internship Program Proves Valuable

Hardwood Lumber Internship Program Proves Valuable

Since we started our Baillie Lumber Internships, our interns - as well as Baillie- have found significant value in the program.

The Lumber Trader Internship Program offers a tremendous opportunity for students to apply what they have learned in the classroom and use their knowledge to gain experience with a global hardwood lumber company.Curtis

This summer,  Curtis Drevets, participated in the program to learn more about being a Lumber Trader.  When asked why he decided to take the Lumber Trader Internship Curtis said, “I was really excited about Baillie’s business with China. I am pretty interested in China and have some experience in Asia, so I was super interested in being around a company that does a lot of business with China and getting to see the inner workings of that.” Through the internship, Curtis was able to get the first-hand experience he desired with our business with China.

Our interns are asked to work on a project that is valuable to the company while also providing a meaningful experience for the individual. In this case, Curtis was tasked with assisting our sales team with new customer development in China. With Curtis’ background in Asia, this topic was of interest to him and also important to Baillie. Curtis was excited about this aspect of the internship that not many companies offer. “You actually do things here at Baillie. You’re not just sitting around… you are actually given a project that adds value to the company, it is something that is significant, and something that the company actually wants to find out. They give you the resources to find out and do the best on that project. That is the unique part about this internship.”

Many times new experiences can bring about personal development. Through the Lumber Trader Internship Curtis expressed that he was able to learn a little bit more about himself. “I learned I really do enjoy the opportunity to go for something, risk something, and potentially fail… I was given a project and allowed do it however I saw fit. I scripted on a specific approach, I was just given a lot of resources and told go for it” said Curtis. “I learned that I really do enjoy those situations, going for it, taking those risks, and then coming back and reflecting and readjusting from there.”

While we take pride in knowing that our internship program is educational and meaningful to students, we also see many benefits for Baillie. Besides the fact that it is beneficial for us to hire many of our promising young interns after graduation, we find the fresh outside perspective that today's students can offer to be extremely valuable. Obtaining an outside perspective can offer a new set of eyes to address a difficult problem or situation, which can really be a great help to our business.

We are always looking for ways to grow and better serve our customers at Baillie. That is why we are excited to announce the installation of a brand new dry line and kiln system at our concentration yard in Galion, Ohio.

DSC7570With the new TS Manufacturing dry line upgrade, we will be able to increase the production capabilities of our Galion facility. The new line doubles our lumber piling capacity and provides us with enhanced lumber sorting abilities to better serve our customers tailored requests. In addition, our implementation of the “infinite fence” and in-line rip saw features on the new line will help us center the boards in relation to the trim saws and allow us to improve board trimming from either end of the board in multiple increments.

While the improvements on the new dry line are exciting in and of themselves, the addition of 6 new kilns will increase our kiln capacity by 65%. Kevin Knepp, the Yard Manager of the Galion facility, is excited about the recent improvements. “The investment in the new kilns and production line at St. James will allow our facility to produce an even better product in higher quantities for our customers”, said Kevin. “The new production line is something our employees are taking great take pride in. It means a lot to them to see the company investing in the yard and the community as we grow.”

DSC7668The new production and drying capacity will enable us to better meet the needs of our customers’ and is expected to enhance our ability to manufacture more of the primary products produced in Galion which have traditionally been Red Oak, White Oak, Ash, Walnut, Poplar, and Cherry.

New Lumber Traders

It is not often that we add people to the family of Lumber Traders. When we do it is usually a positive sign.  Especially when it is two men of high caliber like it is this time.

Baillie Lumber Co. has recently added two Lumber Traders to our domestic sales team.  Jess Gowiski and Wally Klubek have both recently completed our Lumber Trader orientation and training program and have been assigned to regions in North America.

During their training period both men spent time visiting sawmills, working in our Concentration Yards, learning the differences in species, traveling with foresters, and learning the finer details of the hardwood lumber industry.

Learn more about Jess and Wally below. And if you see them in the field be sure to welcome them to the industry.

hardwood log moversIt is not every day that you meet competent young professionals who are looking to work in the forest products industry and are interested in working with large machinery to boot.  So when we do, we are happy to be acquainted!

Recently, the Baillie Log Yard in Williamsport had the need to add to our staff.  We were happy to bring on board Mr. Joe Belzer who is a graduate of a local two year technology degree program. “In a short period of time, Joe has made a significant impact in the Log Yard” said Jon Hand, Baillie Log Yard manager.  “He has proven to be a quick study and handle responsibility well.  We look forward to introducing him to additional aspects of the hardwood log buying business in the very near future.”

The Baillie Log Yard buys and sells hardwood logs year round. It is a significant concentration point for log shipments within the United States and overseas.
