Summer Work Program Provides Benefit

For the past several years Baillie Lumber has benefited from hiring part-time summer office help for those months between May and September.

These seasonal employees, usually a combination of college students and young area professionals, help Baillie complete special projects and keep pace with the standard work load as full time employees take vacations.

This year a majority of the summer work team helped out in our export documentation and logistics departments.

"It is always great to have an influx of summer help", commented Jim McCauley leader of operations at Baillie Lumber.  "Each year they bring excitement, enthusiasm, and new ideas to our workplace."

Many times, besides the obvious benefit of addiional earnings, these summer employees benefit by being exposed to the nuances of business.  As one summer employee put it, "I have learned how important communication is in business. Whether it is between employees here in the office or with salespeople across the ocean, the better people communicate the more productive business will be."

Re-opened in July of 2013, the Baillie Lumber's concentration yard in Galion Ohio continues to grow and is well on its way to increase production back to its historical levels.

Back in 2009, production was temporarily suspended due to economic conditions and the decreased demand for hardwood lumber from markets around the world.

Today, this facility is almost fully functional.  With all of the kilns back in operation this facility is projected to ship approximately 12,000,000 board feet of hardwood lumber annually.

Potter stencilBaillie Lumber Co. and Potter Lumber Company have enjoyed an excellent working relationship for a very long time.  For decades, Potter Lumber Company has entrusted Baillie Lumber to be their primary sales channel for all their kiln dried lumber production.  As a valued core mill provider for Baillie, Potter Lumber has helped provide quality hardwood that has enabled Baillie to meet the different demands of our customers worldwide.

Recently, leaders from both the Baillie and Potter operations worked together to design and implement production enhancements for the Allegany NY facility.  Through a combination of log mix utilization methods, sawing pattern changes and a variation of kiln loading techniques, board footage production has increased over 30% compared to this time year a year ago.

It is exciting to see these enhancements taking root at Potter Lumber Company,” said Jared Fowler the General Manager of Potter Lumber. “The increase in production is coming to fruition at a good time as industry demand for quality hardwood lumber production continues to rise.”

The increases of kiln dried lumber are expected to be in the primary species produced by Potter Lumber which have traditionally been Ash, Cherry, Hard Maple, Red Oak, and Soft Maple. Much of the new production will be available for shipment to customers beginning in early 2014.

New Leader For Yard Operations Team

jason-kelley-Baillie-Lumber-operations-leaderFor years, the Baillie Lumber’s hardwood concentration yards have been led by industry veteran Ken Philbrick.  When Ken announced his intentions to retire earlier this year it was important that Baillie found a replacement that could step into his shoes and keep the operation running smoothly. That’s why when Jason Kelley was selected to be the new leader for all concentration yard operations it seemed like a perfect fit.

Jason, a graduate of the Pennsylvania State University School of Wood Products, was appointed the leader of yard operations for Baillie Lumber effective August 3rd. Prior to this position he was the yard manager at the Baillie facility in Cove City, North Carolina where he lead the team for the past seven years.

During the first few months in his new capacity Jason will be traveling to the different Baillie Lumber facilities to meet as many employees as possible and better understand how each yard approaches their hardwood lumber business.

“There are several existing product and equipment projects already in process at many of our facilities. Although all the yards follow the same basic approach to producing hardwood lumber, the different species, equipment, climates and supply options mean a few subtle differences to what I am used to,” commented Jason Kelley.  “Meeting the team and getting to know each yard better will be a top priority these next few months.”

Jason and his family are in the process of relocating to Upstate New York.

People are familiar with the consumer products hardwood lumber goes into.  Hardwood flooring, cabinetry, furniture and more are all common products in today’s marketplace.  But not many are introduced to the process of how logs are transformed into usable lumber for the  raw materials needed to manufacturer these products.

Piedmont technical College TourBaillie Lumber was happy to provide a tour to a group of students from the Piedmont Technical College participating in the South Carolina Manufacturing Certification program.  This program prepares students for a career in manufacturing.  The program includes 200 hours of classroom instruction with 32 hours of hands-on activities and 8 hours of production simulations.  Students obtain a deeper understanding of the importance of employee safety, quality control, plant maintenance and overall manufacturing production and process design, which leads to a Certified Production Technician credential from the Manufacturing Skill Standards Council (MSSC).

“It is always great to introduce visitors to our facility and what we do. Especially when it is a group of people interested in pursuing a career in manufacturing” said Matt Reynolds Donalds, SC Yard Manager.

The Baillie Lumber location in Donalds, SC is both a sawmill and a lumber concentration yard.  Hardwood logs from timber lots throughout Upstate South Carolina, Western North Carolina and Northeast Georgia are brought to the facility for processing into kiln dried hardwood lumber and timber mats.  The facility primarily processes the species of red oak, white oak and poplar for customers all around the world.

Slabs of Tropical Species are Added to Portfolio

The Spring season is a great time to visit hardwood lumber sawmills in Mexico and Central America. Traditionally, this is the time when the majority of their logs are harvested each year. In general, sawmills in this region are usually smaller than what we are used to in America. They do not produce large volumes, are controlled closely by the authorities and rely on some very old fashioned techniques.

Because of that we find it to be a great place to not only buy properly sustainably managed hardwood lumber products, but also a great place to secure some unique lumber.

On a recent trip to Mexico and select countries in Central America, we were able to secure future shipments of Genuine Mahogany “Swietenia macrophylla”, Caribbean Rosewood, also knSlab-Caribbean-Rosewood-Worldwoodown as Chechen, “metopium, browneii” and many other tropical species we inventory on a regular basis.

The Genuine Mahogany we purchase from here is shipped to us as air dried lumber. We prefer to dry the lumber ourselves at our facility in Cove City, North Carolina to control the manufacturing process and improve the quality for our customers. After drying, we sort the lumber into different grades such as Select and Better, Pattern Grade, Figured stock and some unique musical grade sorts that we develop for our customers.

The Caribbean Rosewood is a colorful and very textured wood that is a great substitute for Morado that is very difficult to source these days. Having new inventories in stock will be a great benefit to our tropical hardwood customers later this year.

Some new items we were able to secure from this region are some unique hardwood lumber slabs. We were able to obtain new fresh slabs of Caribbean Rosewood, Monkeypod, also called Raintree, and Katalox. These beautiful pieces of lumber will be available to customers in the weeks to come and certainly be turned into some fantastic and unique lumber products.Slab-monkeypod-Worldwood

Clendenin Log Program Gears Up For The Summer Months

$

For many years, Clendenin Lumber has been involved in the resale of hardwood logs. Over the past year, we have redefined and sharpened our focus on this program and have improved the way we serve customers in this segment of the hardwood market.

Our Clendenin Lumber Log Program includes a rigorous, multi-step inspection process that was redesigned earlier this year to improve overall log quality for customers.hardwood-logs-sun-shade

In general, once logs are scaled into the yard, the process begins. Hardwood Logs are double end trimmed and all 4 faces of the log are inspected visually from a knuckle boom. From there, logs are segregated and laid out in the appropriate part of the yard based on species and grade. Water is applied to the fresh faces of the log to ensure the internal quality. Logs are then rolled with cant hooks, again ensuring the external faces are proper and meet specifications. Finally, the log team of Jack Hamm and Billy Hook, with over 50 years’ experience between them, inspect each log to ensure it will meet the customer’s specific requirements.

“Summer time means hot weather, so special care must be taken to ensure logs arrive to our customers in the best possible condition”, says Billy Hook Clendenin Log Program Leader. To ensure this hardwood-log-measuring-clendeninhappens the logs from the Clendenin Log Program are stored in shade-dry tents prior to preparation. Special care is also given to each log to limit their exposure to weather. Flitches or S/Irons are included on both ends of every hardwood log, a double coat of wax is applied to each end and any spots of the log without bark.

Clendenin Lumber has a reputation for providing excellent white oak logs. We have access to high quality, high elevation stands of timber in the Smoky Mountain regions of up-state South Carolina, Northeast Georgia and North Carolina. This ensures us a steady and reliable supply of superior white oak logs.

Clendenin is known for the light color of its white oak logs. Current markets served include flat sliced and rotary grade veneer, barrel staves, quarter sawn lumber and production of solid furniture components.

Additional species of hardwood logs available include red oak, poplar, ash, hickory and gum.hardwood-log-measuring2-clendenin

St. James Installs Vision Tally to Improve the Customer Experience

The hardwood lumber industry is a competitive marketplace. Whenever you can improve in efficiency or increase productivity you gain the opportunity to better serve your customers. That’s why we are constantly looking for ways to upgrade expertise, processes, programs, or tools in our facilities. We recently had the opportunity to do just that with the installation of a Vision Tally laser scanning and measuring system at our St. James lumber yard in Galion, Ohio.

Hardwood lumber vision tallyVision tally is a laser scanning technology that measure and tallies bundles of hardwood lumber automatically. This system scans and measures the actual length and width of each board with a dual camera system and then creates a hardwood lumber tally using industry grading rules without manual intervention.

At St. James we opted for installing this system to improve the overall customer experience.  We see the Vision Tally system improving our ability to provide timely, accurate electronic tallies to customers more efficiently.  We see the system enabling us to be more dependable in meeting the documentation needs of our customers and also increasing our ability be flexible and solve problems for customers pertaining to total load measurement in the future.

“The Vision Tally system is a great enhancement the St. James Yard. The team here in Galion, Ohio views this as another investment in our ability help customers with their current and future hardwood lumber needs”, said Bob Bell Baillie Lumber Yard manager.
