Not every hardwood log harvested from a forest is used in a sawmill. To maximize value, sawmills must evaluate the characteristics of a log and determine if it best sawed into lumber. Many times, sawmills determine that some hardwood logs would be better off used to produce wooden veneers or other specialty products such as white oak staves.
For reasons such as this, simply sending all logs from a harvest to a sawmill may not maximize value.
Today, Baillie Lumber operates three hardwood log concentration yards, not associated with sawmills, throughout the state.
These facilities are staffed and managed by experienced industry professionals specifically trained to determine how logs can be utilized best. These facilities are used to purchase, grade, and sort logs to determine which ones are suited for a domestic mill or suited for direct shipment to one of our customers for processing.
“The use of multiple log concentration yards in Pennsylvania has really helped us improve efficiency and volume”, said Jon Hand Hardwood Log Division Manager. “Since they are geographically dispersed across the state it helps us to do business with many more log suppliers.”
Baillie purchases hardwood veneer logs and saw logs from sawmills and loggers year-round. Baillie has developed consistent and reputable markets all across the world which ensure our log suppliers receive the most value from their logs.
Today we find that the hardwood log market is very strong. We see the most requests for White Ash, Walnut, Cherry, and Red Oak logs in all log grades.
